When I’m entertaining, I love to whip up something that’s impressive but secretly super easy to make. These Asian-inspired wings are a perfect example!

Cooking wings in the air fryer gives them the perfect crispy exterior but leaves them nice and juicy inside, making my guests think I’m some sort of wing genius!

I love serving these air fried wings alongside a batch of air fryer banana peppers or a batch of air fryer nachos to share with friends!

And if you like making chicken appetizer recipes in your air fryer, you’ll LOVE my Doritos chicken tenders.

Why You’ll Love Air Fryer Asian Chicken Wings

  • Unique flavors: While I love traditional buffalo wings and barbecue wings, sometimes I’m just craving something different. This asian-inspired sauce hits the spot and still has a nice kick.
  • Restaurant-quality: Impress guests with extra crispy wings coated in a flavorful homemade sauce that’s way easier to make than it looks.
  • Healthier than takeout: Whether it’s Asian food or wings that you’re wanting, this recipe satisfies both cravings without deep frying!

Ingredients

  • Chicken wings: I always go with the wings and drumettes, but if you prefer one over the other, do you! You can also make this recipe with lollipop wings if you really want to impress!
  • Sauce: A trio of chili garlic sauce, hoisin sauce, and soy sauce come together to make the base of the tangy and savory-sweet sauce.
  • Light brown sugar: This helps to balance out all of the umami flavors with some complex sweetness.
  • Lime: Using both fresh lime juice and lime zest gives your air fryer wings a delicious pop of citrus flavor.

Substitutions

  • Teriyaki Sauce: For a little a shortcut, use it in place of the soy sauce and brown sugar.
  • White Wine Vinegar: Can be used instead of rice vinegar if you already have it in your pantry.
  • Olive Oil: I like the flavor sesame oil adds to the sauce, but you can use olive oil instead if that’s what you have.
  • Honey: Use honey (or agave nectar) in place of brown sugar if you need to.

Variations

  • Asian Chicken Tenders: This sauce is also great for coating breaded chicken tenders or air fryer chicken nuggets, or as a dipping sauce.
  • Sweet Chili Wings: Omit the soy sauce and hoisin sauce to emphasize the chili flavor.
  • Korean Chicken Wings: Add some gochujang to your sauce instead of the sweet chili sauce.
  • Pepper Chicken Wings: Leave out the chili sauce and add extra black pepper and white pepper to give your wings a peppery bite.
  • Asian Chicken Thighs: You can use this sauce to marinate chicken thighs and make them in the air fryer or on the grill! Check out my Asian Chicken Thighs recipe for how to cook them.

Storage and Reheating

Keep any leftover chicken wings in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. You can also freeze them for a few months. I recommend using a Ziploc bag for that!

Pop the wings back in the air fryer or cover them with aluminum foil and bake in the oven to reheat. You can reheat these right from frozen, they’ll just need a couple of extra minutes at about 350F.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Wings

If you want something a little lighter on the side, serve your crispy chicken wings with polenta fries or these crunchy radish chips. They also pair well with a batch of air fried pickles, and for all of my sweet-tooths out there, follow up your wings with this s’mores dip!

FAQs

How do I get my air fryer chicken wings extra crispy?

If you find that your wings aren’t crispy enough, be sure to pat away all the moisture with paper towels before cooking. You can also coat them in a mixture of flour and cornstarch for some extra crunch!

Should I sauce my wings before air fryer?

I prefer to add the sauce after the wings are air fried. This prevents the sauce from burning while the wings cook.

Can you cook raw chicken in the air fryer?

Yep, just be sure to cook to an internal temperature of at least 165 F!

Should I flour my wings before air frying?

Adding flour along with the seasonings can help give you crispier wings, but I find they get a nice crisp exterior even without flour.
